Bulk Objectives Creation
1. What does this feature do? (High-Level Overview)
Section titled “1. What does this feature do? (High-Level Overview)”This feature lets users create multiple Short-Term Objectives (STOs) in one action and optionally create or replace the Long-Term Objective (LTO) in the same workflow. Users can create objectives directly from the form or use the optional preview button to inspect the generated STO and LTO wording before saving.
This is a supporting workflow inside plan details, not a separate BIP tab.
2. Who is this for? (Roles & Permissions)
Section titled “2. Who is this for? (Roles & Permissions)”- Users with BIP edit access (
manage_bips): Can open the bulk generator, create STOs, optionally preview the generated objectives, choose how existing STOs are handled, and optionally create or replace the plan LTO. - Product Owner, Stakeholders, and Project Manager: Can use this guide to understand expected behavior, constraints, and workflow.
3. Business Rules & Enforcements
Section titled “3. Business Rules & Enforcements”- Rule 1: The workflow is opened from plan detail using Create objectives in bulk.
- Rule 2: The workflow always creates at least one STO. LTO creation is optional.
- Rule 3: The form opens with defaults selected:
- Generation mode is Objectives count.
- Objectives defaults to 10.
- STO weeks defaults to 4.
- Create LTO is turned on.
- LTO weeks defaults to 12.
- Existing STO handling defaults to Replace not-started STOs.
- Rule 4: Default start and target values depend on plan type:
- Maladaptive plans start from the plan baseline and target 0.
- Replacement and training plans start at 0 and target 100.
- Rule 5: Users can choose one of two STO generation methods:
- Objectives count, where the user enters the number of STOs to create.
- Interval size, where the user enters the step size and the application calculates how many STOs are needed.
- Rule 6: In Objectives mode, the user must enter at least 1 objective.
- Rule 7: In Interval mode, the user must enter a whole-number interval of at least 1, and Calculated objectives is shown as read-only guidance.
- Rule 8: The user must enter both Start point and Final target, and they cannot be equal.
- Rule 9: STO weeks must be between 1 and 12.
- Rule 10: The comparison operator is inferred from Start point and Final target, then constrained by direction:
- Increase allows
>or>=. - Decrease allows
<or<=.
- Increase allows
- Rule 11: In Interval mode, the system creates one STO per interval step and automatically calculates the number of objectives needed to reach the final target.
- Rule 12: In Interval mode, the last STO may be shorter than the interval if that is required to land exactly on the final target.
- Rule 13: Preview is optional. Users can click Preview to review the generated rows, or click Create directly. Both actions validate and generate from the current form values.
- Rule 14: The preview appears inside the same dialog and can be hidden with Hide preview.
- Rule 15: Users must choose how existing STOs are handled before saving. The available choices are:
- Replace not-started STOs: Deletes only existing STOs still marked Not Started and keeps objectives that have already started.
- Add to existing STOs: Appends the generated STOs.
- Replace all existing STOs: Deletes all current STOs before adding the generated set.
- Rule 16: When the selected STO handling option will delete existing STOs, the modal shows how many STOs will be deleted.
- Rule 17: If Create LTO is enabled:
- LTO uses category-specific templates.
- LTO weeks are separate from STO weeks and must be between 1 and 12.
- LTO Start point and Target are set to the same value (the final STO target).
- LTO uses the same comparison operator selected for STOs.
- Rule 18: If a plan already has an LTO and Create LTO is enabled, the UI warns that the existing LTO will be replaced.
- Rule 19: If Create LTO is turned off, the existing LTO is preserved.
- Rule 20: New objectives created through this flow default to Not Started.
- Rule 21: Saved STOs are ordered after any STOs that remain in the plan, and objective order is normalized after creation.
- Rule 22: If any objective in the bulk transaction fails validation, the full operation is rolled back and no partial creation is saved.
4. UI Placement
Section titled “4. UI Placement”- Patient Record > BIP: Open the patient’s BIP.
- Choose a plan tab: Open Maladaptives, Replacements, RBT Training Plans, Caregiver Training Plans, or Teacher Training Plans when available.
- Open a specific plan: Enter the plan detail view.
- Objectives area: Use the button Create objectives in bulk.
5. How-To Guide (Step-by-Step)
Section titled “5. How-To Guide (Step-by-Step)”Scenario A: Create objectives directly from the default form

- In the plan detail view, select Create objectives in bulk.
- Review the default values for Objectives, STO weeks, Start point, Final target, Operator, STO template, Create LTO, and Existing STOs.
- Adjust any values that do not match the plan’s clinical target.

- Leave Create LTO turned on if the workflow should create a matching LTO. Turn it off if the current LTO should be preserved.

6. What happens if…? (Edge Cases / FAQ)
Section titled “6. What happens if…? (Edge Cases / FAQ)”- Q: Can the user create objectives without previewing them first?
- A: Yes. Preview is optional. Selecting Create validates the current form values and generates the objectives before saving.
- Q: What happens to existing STOs by default?
- A: The default option is Replace not-started STOs, so only existing STOs that are still Not Started are deleted. STOs that have already started or reached another status are preserved.
- Q: What happens if the plan already has an LTO?
- A: Because Create LTO is on by default, creating objectives will replace the current LTO unless the user turns Create LTO off before saving.
