BIP Chart Comment Positioning

1. What does this feature do? (High-Level Overview)

Section titled “1. What does this feature do? (High-Level Overview)”

This feature lets users choose where chart comment text appears vertically on BIP progress charts: top, middle, or bottom. It helps teams place comments where they are easiest to read without changing the comment date, scope, or chart data.

  • Users with BIP edit access (manage_bips): Can add, update, and delete chart comments, including the selected text position.
  • Users with BIP view access (view_bips): Can view saved chart comments on BIP progress charts.
  • Users with BIP export access (export_bip): Can export BIP charts that preserve saved chart comments and their selected positions when chart sections are included.
  • Rule 1: Each chart comment requires a date and comment text.
  • Rule 2: Comment text is limited to 50 characters.
  • Rule 3: The comment position must be Top, Middle, or Bottom.
  • Rule 4: New comments default to Top if the user does not change the position.
  • Rule 5: Existing comments with no saved position are treated as Top.
  • Rule 6: Updating a comment can also update its chart position.
  • Rule 7: Comment scope is separate from position. A comment can still be saved for This Goal Only or All Goals, and the selected position only controls where the text appears on the chart.
  • Rule 8: Comments are still filtered by the same chart date context. Position does not make a comment appear outside the chart’s reporting window.

  • Q: What happens if the user does not choose a position?
    • A: The comment is saved and displayed at the top of the chart by default.
  • Q: Does changing the position change whether the comment applies to one goal or all goals?
    • A: No. Scope and position are separate choices.
  • Q: Can a comment be placed outside Top, Middle, or Bottom?
